Srinagar, Sep 04 (KNO): Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq on Friday said he was again placed under house arrest and barred from attending the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, where he was scheduled to preside over a religious gathering. In a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a spokesperson said Mirwaiz, in a post on X, stated that he was again placed under house arrest on Friday and prevented from attending the Majlis-e-Rahmatal lil Aalameen (SAW) at Jama Masjid Srinagar. The spokesperson said the function was organised in connection with the blessed month of Rabi-ul-Awwal and would feature tributes to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) by leading scholars. It would also mark the release of Gulzar Ahmad Parray’s word-for-word Kashmiri translation of the Holy Qur’an and the felicitation of young scholar Mufti Showkat Ahmad Qasmi for memorising the complete Sahih al-Bukhari. Mirwaiz said the restrictions, particularly on Fridays, to prevent him from addressing the faithful at Jama Masjid and performing his duties as Mirwaiz, though personally painful, would not deter him from fulfilling his responsibilities and raising the people’s voice for their rights. He also expressed concern over Mohammad Yasin Malik’s reported affidavit, particularly his decision not to contest the case further and seek the extreme penalty while maintaining his innocence. “It calls for serious reflection on commitments made to him and reinforces the need for due process, fairness and a humane approach,” he said.—(KNO)
